ESB Women's Irish Trophy 1st Round

Galway 1st:  5 Scorers: Lynsey Trainor, Tara Melvin, Deirdre Hatton (3)

Kilkenny 1st: 1

Galway Ladies began their quest for the Irish Trophy in Kilkenny last Saturday afternoon as they faced Kilkenny Ladies 1st team in the first round of the competition. On a miserable day in the marble city the rain took a break and the sun shone as both teams stepped on to the field of play. Galway started where they had left off the previous week against NUIG by scoring three goals in the first ten minutes of the match it was Deirdre Hatton who began Galway's scoring finishing off a well worked move which seen Galway break from inside their own half. It has Hatton again who finish off a short corner rebound cooly sloting the ball above the kilkenny keeper and into the roof of the net. Galway were really in free flow at this stage with every attack being mounted looking like a realistic goal scoring oppertunity, and it wasn't long before a third duly arrived as Lynsey Trainor glided between two Kilkenny players before nutting the keeper to score Galway's third goal. The Galway defence marsheled by Timmins & Melvin in the centre were seldom troubled and were ably assist by the two full backs Claire Heskin and Louise Fahy. The midfield was dominated as usual by the impressive Tara Melvin, Alison Hynes and Jessica Mc Nickan who clever and probing with there passing thorough the kilkenny defence. So as the teams broke at the interval Galway were well on top having secured a three goal cushion. Galway were quickly brought back down to earth with a bang in the second half as Kilkenny scored early and began to apply some early pressure. The Galway forwards lead by Captain Meave Faherty struggled to fine their feet in the 2nd half, however both Roseanne Regan and Deirdre Hatton were guilty of missing excellent chances to finish off the tie. Galway had to wait until late into the half before Deirdre Hatton claimed her first hat-trick of the season as she deflect a pass from Timmins into the roof of the next. Galway contunued to press for another and it was Tara Melvin who scored from the top of the circle. So Galway advance into the second round where they will face Cookstown a team that reached the quaterfinals in this competition last year.
