Church of Ireland 2nds: 0
Galway Hockey Club 2nds: 1 Scorer: Niamh Codyre
In what proved to be a trilling encounter at Garryduff sports centre on Sunday, Galway Hockey Club upset the odds by defeating Church of Ireland 2nds on their home ground. While the narrow score line does not reflect what was truly an open and flowing contest with both sides creating numerous chances. However both sides were guilty of not taking their opportunities, it was the Galway side that certainly had the better of the opening exchanges and following some excellent hockey down the left hand side of the pitch it was Deirdre Hatton who delivered a reverse stick pass across the face of the Church goal, for the waiting Niamh Codyre to cooly slot home from close range to hand Galway the lead. Galway continued to have the better of the early exchanges for the first half with Elaine Newell, Deirdre Hatton and Louise Conlon controlled the midfield. While at the back Captain Louise Thorton, Emma Glanville, Michelle Carey, and Helena Lydon were resolute with their defending not allowing Church any opportunities and managing to keep their forwards at bay. Into the second half, it was certainly a game of two halves as church came out fighting and applied pressure on the Galway defense right from the restart. It was mainly thanks to the excellent play from goal keeper Tara Browne ensured that the score line remained the same. However the work rate of the Galway forward line was exceptional with Niamh Codyre, Rachel Cloonan, Roseanne Regan and Kate O'Callaghan all proving their worth as they both defended and attacked with great energy! So at the the final whistle it was Galway who came thorough the first round to setup up a repeat of last years 2nd round clash as the face UCD 2nds in Galway on the 14th of November.
